Kratom is an herbal supplement derived from the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree, which is native to Southeast Asia. People commonly use Kratom to address pain, calm the mind, and/or ease the symptoms of opioid withdrawal. The plant’s active compounds, primarily mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, interact with the brain’s receptors in ways that can create a mild stimulating effect, or even bring about a sense of calm, depending on the dose.

Kratom’s benefits vary depending on how it’s used and the individual taking it. Some of the most popular reasons for using kratom include:

Energy Boosting:

Small doses can be invigorating, helping users feel more focused and motivated.

Pain Relief:

Many turn to kratom for relief from discomfort without relying on stronger medications.

Relaxation and Mood Support:

In slightly larger doses, kratom can provide a mild calming effect.

Kratom is available in various forms. Powder, capsules, and even teas. New users are highly recommended to start with a small dose (0.5-2 grams or a half of a can of a kratom beverage) and gradually increase as they determine their body’s response. Many users say kratom powder is the most effective form, though capsules and pre-made beverages are a more convenient option for on-the-go use.

Our team at Turning Leaf has firsthand experience with Kratom. Here’s how it fits into their daily routines:

“Kratom is best to start with less and work your way up if needed. But starting at a 0.5-2g dose is a great way to see if you like it without overdoing it.”

“I prefer capsules when taking kratom. This way I can easily monitor dosing, and avoid the earthy flavor. ”

One of the biggest questions around kratom is its classification.

So, is kratom an opioid?

Technically, no. Though kratom does interact with opioid receptors in the brain, it’s not an opioid itself. Instead, it works similarly, which is why it can have mild effects resembling opioids, especially when it comes to pain relief and relaxation.

Kratom has helped me personally get off of opioid medication. I continue to use it daily because it has helped with my restless leg and body feeling while also giving me a boost of energy, focus, and good mood feeling.

Side Effects of Kratom

While kratom has its benefits, users should be aware of potential side effects, which may include:

  • Drowsiness or fatigue (especially at higher doses)
  • Nausea and upset stomach
  • Dependency risk: Some users report mild dependency with prolonged use.
  • Interactions: There may be adverse reactions if Kratom is mixed with other prescription medications. Always consult with your doctor if you are worried.

Is Kratom Safe?

Kratom’s safety largely depends on the individual and how it’s used. Like many herbal supplements, kratom can cause side effects, especially with high or frequent use. With everything moderation is key, and new users should avoid mixing kratom with other substances.

Kratom’s legality varies worldwide. While it’s legal in many parts of the U.S., some states and countries have banned it due to safety concerns. It’s essential to check local regulations before purchasing or using kratom. At Turning Leaf, we’re excited to offer kratom in Minnesota and North Dakota, where it’s legal and ready for you to experience the benefits. Unfortunately, in Wisconsin, the laws don’t allow us to sell it, so we can’t offer it there.

Does Kratom Get You High?

Kratom doesn’t create the same “high” as substances like cannabis. However, some users report mild euphoria at moderate doses, which could be why kratom is sometimes perceived as having mind-altering effects. At lower doses, the effects are generally subtle and more akin to a mild energy boost or focus enhancement.

For those interested in natural remedies, kava and kratom might seem similar, but they offer distinct effects. While kratom can provide stimulation or calm, kava is known solely for its relaxing properties. Kava has a long history as a social beverage in the South Pacific, promoting calm and easing stress without the same range of effects kratom has. For individuals seeking relaxation without the potential for stimulation, kava may be the better choice. For more information on Kava be sure to check out this article that dives into the differences between Kava and Kanna.

“They [Kratom/Kava/Kanna] can be very beneficial alternatives for things we tend to enjoy like alcohol and opiates but we know they do not serve us well. Though kava may not be that immediately buzz feel, it still makes you “warm and fuzzy” with the right dosage. It is important for us to find the benefits in the alternatives to be able to enjoy them.” ~ Alexis

“Ask for samples at your local store, we love to give an opportunity for people to test what might work for them!” ~Kate
